Can donated blood be stored indefinitely until it is needed?

All components of whole blood have a shelf life for human transfusion. Red blood cells have a 42-day shelf life. Platelets, the clotting element in blood used for cancer and leukemia patients, have a shelf life of five days. Plasma, used primarily for burn victims and patients with bleeding disorders, has a shelf life of one year.
