Launched for the 1996-1997 school year, Central Blood Bank’s High
School Scholarship Program (HSSP) is a successful partnership between the blood
center and regional high schools and technical schools.
Through the participation of the schools involved, Central Blood Bank has the
opportunity to educate and motivate students to become blood donors. Statistics
show that people who begin donating in high school are more likely to continue
giving blood through their lifetime. Local high school students provide an
important source of first-time donors, and provide an impact to maintaining an
adequate blood supply. Converting high school students into lifelong blood
donors also helps ensure sustainable blood inventories moving forward.
In the 2007-2008 school year, local high school students donated 17,815
lifesaving units of blood to our community, and brightened the lives of up to
53,000 area transfusion patients. Over 10% of Central Blood Bank’s total
collections were from this young segment of our population.
Program Goals:
-
Encourage and recruit young blood donors, and reward local high schools and
technical schools in the process
-
Provide students with information relating to our community’s blood supply
-
Help demonstrate to high school students the importance of volunteer blood
donors to patients at hospitals throughout the tri-state area
-
Help high school students develop an awareness of community responsibility by
becoming actively involved with civic-minded activities
How the Program Works
To qualify for the HSSP, a school must hold three blood drives during the school
year on school property. High school students or a student group must be
actively involved in the coordination, hosting, and recruitment of the drive. A
school faculty or staff member serves as a primary contact. Central Blood Bank
will provide extensive blood donation education beforehand and actively assist
throughout the blood drive planning process.
Schools are placed into divisions with other schools of similar size (based on
the population of the senior class). Results are calculated based on the
percentage of participation against the senior class population. The current
division breakdown (by size of senior class) is:
Division I – 30-70 seniors
Division II – 71-110 seniors
Division III – 111-150 seniors
Division IV – 151-200 seniors
Division V – 201-300 seniors
Division VI – 301 or more seniors
Division VII – Technical Schools
